About
About Durham Mountaineering

Roots in Durham. Built for the World.
Durham Mountaineering was founded in 1981 by Joe Davison, a physics teacher from Durham with a passion for the outdoors and a talent for quality gear. What began in a back room at his home in Nevilles Cross grew into a quietly respected name in British outdoor circles.
The brand stood apart for its craftsmanship and personal approach. Adventurers could customise garments to their own specifications—choosing fabrics, patterns, and colours to suit their terrain and style. This helped build a loyal community and earned the brand trust on serious expeditions.
Durham Mountaineering kit was part of landmark climbs—from the East Face of Xixabangma to the Southern Ocean, the Karakoram, and the Shelin Maiden Glacier. These adventures tested the brand’s quality and spirit in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
The business expanded from Joe’s home to a room in the old Durham Johnston School, eventually moving to a factory at Littleburn Industrial Estate in 1993. Along the way, the brand introduced technical innovations like ice climbing jackets and gaiters, made with care and purpose.
Challenges and Farewell
The original chapter closed in 2003 after a series of personal and operational challenges. The small, dedicated team faced tragic loss and changing circumstances, and vital equipment became irreparable.
Joe made the difficult decision to close the business, selling off stock and machinery. Though the original run ended, the legacy remains—in stories, vintage kit, and the brand’s lasting spirit.

Legacy and Return
Durham Mountaineering is being brought back—not as a retro label, but as a continuation of the spirit Joe started. The revival honours what came before: understated quality, strong roots in the North East, and a focus on thoughtful, timeless design.
Building on its heritage, this new chapter creates apparel made for today’s explorers—simple, genuine, and made to last, whether you’re in the hills or just appreciating the outdoors.
The name might be familiar to some, new to others—but the ethos remains the same: Durham born. World proven.
